(Riya Saha, Intern Journalist)Coronavirus patients, suspects, and people above 65 years of age will be eligible for the postal ballot, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The Election Commission announced this major change in voting rules amid the pandemic keeping in mind the Bihar elections.
Before this, only people over the age of 80 and those working in essential services department and posted outside their home state were allowed to vote by postal ballot.
People over 65 years of age are at a high risk of contracting the virus. The government and health experts have been advising elderly people to stay at home during the pandemic. Keeping this in mind, the government has made major changes in the voting rules pertaining to postal votes.
